Our ugly side garden needed some help.
So, they dug and dug, they took out the old plants.
Now they put in lots of compost - that is plant stuff that has been left outside and turned to dirt. You remember when Mary would see a rotting log in the woods and she would kick it a little bit some of the wood falls off the log but it falls off in such small pieces it's like dirt. Mary just loves that stuff and thinks it's such great dirt. That process of plant materials breaking apart into smaller pieces is called decomposition.
The plant pieces will keep breaking apart into smaller and smaller pieces until the plant is so small it is dissolved by the water and then - super cool - those little plant pieces are so small that they get sucked up into the plant by the roots.
Remember Mary has shown you the little white roots in the ground. Yep, those little tiny thread looking roots carry water and nutrition to the plant. And to think it's from big leaves or logs that are breaking down into tiny pieces.
Now it is done. It looks kind of boring now but in the spring those bushy plants will have pretty pink flowers on them. They are called azaleas. They will grow a lot bigger. But the tall thin plants will not grow much wider but will grow a little taller.
The funny thing about azaleas is that they love coffee !! If I put cold coffee on them they grow really strong. Isn't that funny?
But I guess it makes sense that Papa's plants would like coffee.
Good bye, till next time

I'm excited to see how beautiful it will be in the spring. You have a true green thumb. Erin
Ethan says that you don't have a green thumb....he says your thumb is yellowish white.
Zack says he likes the cupcake and the coffee cup cat. funny that the plants like coffee.
Henry says "cat, cat, cat, cat, cat, cat, cat" and "mmmm, bat (bite)" and "cat, cat, cat, cat, cat, cat, cat, cat"
The yard looks so nice! What are they going to do with the hostas? (which btw, love to be dug up and thrown around... it makes them grow more - weird)
The Hostas are transplanted to the end of the garden. We cut them back real hard.
